Tax Tips: Claiming Vehicle Expenses for Bulky Equipment Transport
Do you use large or heavy tools for work? If so, you might be wondering whether you can claim your car expenses when transporting them. The good news: the ATO does allow it—but only under strict conditions.
This month, we’re highlighting a reminder from the NTAA on what qualifies as a work-related deduction when it comes to transporting bulky equipment.
🚗 When Can You Claim Travel?
Normally, travel between home and your regular workplace is considered private and not deductible. But an exception applies if:
- You carry bulky or heavy equipment needed for work (e.g., ladders, tool kits, portable massage tables);
- There is no secure storage available at your workplace; and
- The equipment is essential to perform your job.
If all of the above are true, the ATO allows you to claim the travel as work-related.
❌ What You Can’t Claim
If your workplace provides secure storage (even if it’s less convenient), or if the equipment isn’t essential to your duties, then your travel is likely still private and not deductible.
This was confirmed in a past case where a technician's vehicle claim was denied because his employer provided secure on-site storage, even though the tools were heavy.
✅ Our Advice
To support your claim:
- Keep a logbook of your travel.
- Record the size, weight, and necessity of the equipment.
- Get a statement from your employer if no secure storage is available.
Transporting bulky work equipment may qualify you for deductions—but the ATO expects solid evidence. When in doubt, get professional advice to make sure your claim meets the rules and won’t be denied in an audit. As always, we’re here to help you get it right.
